Description Aflatoxin B1 is a toxic secondary metabolite of the fungi species Aspergillus flavus, A. parasiticus and A. nominus. Aflatoxins are believed to be the most carcinogenic naturally occurring substances. Aflatoxin B1 is the most potent of all of the aflatoxins. Aflatoxin B1 is most commonly found in peanuts, corn, and oil seeds such as cotton. Aflatoxin B1 has also been found to contaminate wheat, sorghum, Brazil nuts, legumes and rice as well as many other commercially important foods. As aflatoxin B1 is heat stable, it is very difficult to destroy once formed.
Intend Use The Rapid Aflatoxin B1 Test Kit is a qualitative and rapid lateral flow assay designed to detect Aflatoxin B1 residues in feed at 8 ppb.
Principle Of The Test The assay uses a competitive colloidal gold based format to test Aflatoxin B1 residues in feed. If Aflatoxin B1 is present in the sample it will therefore bind with the conjugate and will be labeled. As the sample migrates along the membrane and reaches the capture zone an excess of labeled antibody will bind to the immobilized antigen so that no visible line is produced. The bound conjugate will then bind to the antibodies in the control zone producing a visible control line. A single control line on the membrane is a positive result. Two visible lines in the capture and control zones is a negative result. However, if an excess of unlabelled Aflatoxin B1 are not present, a weak line may be produced in the capture zone, indicating an inconclusive result.
Sensitivity The minimum detectable dose of Aflatoxin B1 was determined to be approximately 8 ppb.
